Congratulations to Sarah Krzemien on being CrossFit Silver Fox's CrossFitter of the month for June 2015!

Congratulations Sarah!!!! Sarah is VERY dedicated to CrossFit Silver Fox! She joined us almost immediately in October of 2014.  She really busted her ass in the Super RX Clean Eating/Fitness Challenge where she lost over 20 lbs and improved in her benchmark among other accomplishments. Oh and by the way SHE SAVES LIVES!!

If you see Sarah, tell her congratulations! Read what she had to say about her journey.

·         When did you start this thing called CrossFit?
                   I started in Oct 2014
·         What do you do when you’re not here? Your profession?
I'm a mom, a college student, a brown belt, a vegetarian, and Mercy EMT (and a terrible comedian)
·         What brought your to CrossFit Silver Fox?
A friend from work talked me into it

·         What keeps you at CrossFit Silver Fox?
I'm addicted to the results I get from the workouts.  Having a trainer right there pushing you has made a huge difference.
 ·         Biggest Improvements/struggles with CrossFit?
I’ve improved my cardio and running.  I started running outside of the gym now too!  I do struggle with nutrition outside of the gym though.
 ·         How many days do you train at CrossFit Silver Fox?
Depends on my schedule. I average 3 days a week
 ·         What makes your come in and train on days when you don’t want to?
I just force myself to because I know I always feel better after a workout.  Excuses don’t burn calories!
 ·         What is your approach towards nutrition?
I love food and I like to eat healthy.  I do give myself “cheat days” though.
 ·         If you could design your own workout
I’d call it the “Sarah” where we power nap for 20 min

·         Favorite Benchmark workout?
                     Cindy

What is the most challenging part of your CrossFit journey?
It’s tough getting a PR when lifting.  It doesn’t happen every time we go for one, so it makes me want to work harder for next time.
 ·         Super Power you would want most?
                                Oooh, I’d say invisibility.

·         Any advice for new comers?
CrossFit Silver Fox is a wonderful gym.  We have great people and friendly competition. People really cheer for and push each other during workouts.  Your accomplishments are celebrated and your struggles are improved upon.  Enjoy the workouts and the results will follow!

·         Favorite activities outside of CrossFit?
Running (never thought I would say that) , traveling with my family, and sleeping

·         Name something about yourself that is a little known fact.
Not a lot of people know I come from a huge family.  There were 7 people in my immediate family growing up!
·        Accomplishments at the gym. PR’s, Weight Loss, etc?
My name is up on the board for heavy power cleans and presses, but my biggest accomplishment has been losing 30lbs in the past few months!  I also started running outside the gym and did my first 5k this summer.

·        Goals for the remainder of the year?
I’d like to lose another 20lbs and PR all my lifts by the end of the year. I'm working on a few more 5ks too :)

KAITLYN WARREN

Name: Kaitlyn Warren
Occupation: HR
City you live in: Batavia

How did you hear about CrossFit Silver Fox?
Word of mouth. We heard CrossFit Silver Fox had opened in the Harvester Building. My husband stopped in to check it out and we joined shortly after that.

What made you want to join CrossFit Silver Fox?
I wanted a workout that wouldn't be boring. No workout is ever exactly the same so it keeps things interesting. I'm always curious what the next days workout is going to be.

What made you nervous before joining?
Just the unfamiliar. A new gym, new people, new trainers (Jason & Jen) & new exercises that I had never done. It didn't take long for the nerves to subside though!

What is the biggest thing you've noticed since you began?
At the beginning I used to always say I can't do this and now I'm like ok I got this!

What have you improved the most in?
A lot! My endurance & strength has improved a ton in 4 months time.

What do you enjoy the most at the gym?
I get in a AMAZING workout and I get to hang out with AWESOME people!

What differences have you noticed (non-physical) in yourself since joining?
I feel more focused and determined to accomplish goals in other areas of my life.

What is your Kryptonite?
WALL BALL!!! (keep that all in CAPS)

What do you love the most about CrossFit?
Just the feeling of accomplishment after I've finished my workout. I always walk out feeling better than I did when I walked in.

What advice would you give a new CrossFitter?
Don't give up!! I told my husband that 1st week " I don't know if I can do this!" The classes are challenging and my muscles were sore but I'm so glad I kept with it. Setting even small goals helps me to stay motivated.

What are your goals in the next 6 months at the gym?
Set PR goals (maybe a pull up with no band) continue to improve on my endurance and strength training, & just continue on this journey of living a happier and healthier lifestyle!

Awesome stuff!!! Keep up the good work!  Who's next month's CrossFitter??

Congratulations!  Michael is the CrossFit Silver Fox CrossFitter of the month for April!  He has been dedicated, driven and a wonderful presence at the gym and we are thrilled to have him....not that we have a choice lol .From PR's to just overall hard work, he is always busting his ass to be #1.  Congrats again and keep up the hard work.

Home: Batavia, NY

How did you hear about CFSF?
My brother is the owner

What made you want to join CrossFit Silver Fox?
Jason would not shut up(he seriously would not) about how awesome Crossfit is.

What made you nervous before joining?
Olympic style lifting.  I was worried about injuring myself or dropping the weight when lifting above my head.  Thanks to Jason's amazing training(not really lol) I have become more confident in the movements.

What is the biggest thing you've noticed since you began?
I have abs now.  Plus I learned all the best ways to lift my shirt up inconspicuously from Jason. Why use a towel when you can just use the bottom part of your shirt.

What have you improved the most in?
Everything.  I have become much stronger, I have more endurance, and have even become a better runner.  Crossfit has greatly improved my overall fitness level.

What do you enjoy the most at the gym?
The friendly atmosphere.  It is a great place to workout where everyone is open and welcoming.

What differences have you noticed (non-physical) in yourself since joining?
I have become much more committed to fitness and eating better.

What is your Kryptonite?
Push press and deadlifts

What do you love the most about CrossFit?
The competitive atmosphere, everyone is always pushing each other to do better.

Is there someone that inspires you?
Darth Vader, I hope to one day be as strong in the force as him.(I already have the lightsaber.)

What do you like the least?
The parking lol, my shocks can't take much more.

What are your future goals at the gym?
Keep getting stronger and do a muscle up that isn't painful.

Congratulations to March's CrossFitter of the month, Kenny Plossl! GREAT JOB!

Congratulations!  Kenny is the CrossFit Silver Fox CrossFitter of the month for March!  He has been dedicated, driven and a wonderful presence at the gym and we are thrilled to have him! From PR's to just overall hard work, he is an asset and inspiration to others in the gym.  Congrats again and keep up the hard work.

What made you want to join CrossFit Silver Fox?

I had always wanted to try CrossFit, and one day I was looking at The Batavian and I read the article about the gym opening up in the Harvester building, so I decided to give it a try. I have always enjoyed trying different workouts and I have heard that CrossFit workouts are different everyday so I thought it would be a good fit. I’m glad I decided to give it a try because its been 5 months and I look forward to coming in every day.

What were you nervous about before starting, and now realized it was nothing to worry about?

I would say I was most nervous about the heavier lifting aspect of CrossFit. I’ve always tried to stay pretty active, but my strengths are more in running than in lifting. I have surprised myself in what I’ve been able to lift. At times I still get nervous I’m going to hurt my back on dead lifts, but it doesn’t discourage me from at least trying.

What is the biggest thing you’ve noticed since you began?

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is in how I feel in general. I just feel altogether more healthy and more trim than when i first started. I don’t know if waking up early every morning and going to the 6AM class has boosted my immune system, but I’ve managed to avoid getting sick unlike everyone around me. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself!

What have you improved the most in?

The area in which I have improved the most in I would have to say is Double Unders. When I first joined I remember thinking it looked impossible to be able to do continuous Double Unders unbroken, so I was pretty stoked when I was able to do just one! I’ve  gotten to 62 so I’m pretty excited about that.

What do you enjoy the most at the gym?

The thing I enjoy the most at the gym the most is running. I like to enter races (when the cold air doesn’t hurt my face and everything isn’t covered in a mountain of snow). I also really enjoy when we do hand stands and hand stand pushups; doing inversions reminds me of yoga.

What differences have you noticed in yourself since joining?

The biggest difference I’ve noticed since joining would be just being more aware of what I’m putting into my body. Since I try to go every morning I have made more of a conscious effort to eat a lot healthier than I had before.

What is your Kryptonite?

My kryptonite would have to be burpees. No matter how long you do them, they never magically become fun, and anyone that says they love burpees is probably kidding!

What do you love the most about CrossFit?

What I love the most about CrossFit is the atmosphere there. It’s not like going to the gym by yourself, using a few machines and then leaving because you are bored. The workouts are set for you so you don’t have to think, “hmm, what to do next?”. Everyone there is very supportive and encouraging too, so if you put in the time and effort you will definitely see results. It is a great way to start the day feeling accomplished!

What do you like the least?

What do I like the least? Probably waking up to come, I set my alarm for 5, and I have to hit the snooze button once or twice before making myself get up to leave the house. Once I’m in the car and fully awake I feel fine. Once winter is over I anticipate it will get a lot easier!

What are your future goals at the gym?

My personal goals for my workouts would be to keep pushing myself every time I come. In the 5 months since I’ve been there I have set some personal records for myself and I hope to continue to beat those!

I’m very glad I found out about CrossFit SilverFox. I have met some great people and have pushed myself hard and have seen results. If anyone would like to join me in any upcoming races this spring let me know!

February's CrossFitter of the month! Amanda Jennings!

Congratulations to CrossFit Silver Fox's CrossFitter of the month....
Amanda Jennings!

Amanda is a pleasure to have in class. CrossFit Silver Fox is fortunate to have such a motivated & hard working lady in the gym.  Amanda is kicking ass at CrossFit Silver Fox. She recently PR'd her back squat at 245#!!!  If we can brainwash her a little more, we see competitions in her future.

As per the norm, we asked our CrossFitter of the month a few questions. Please take the time and read her responses.

What made you want to join CrossFit Silver Fox?
This stunning young lad :-) … but in seriousness the article on The Batavian/The Batavia Daily News made me aware there was a CrossFit gym in Batavia.  I had watched the competitions on TV and wanted to see what WODs were all about for myself. After talking about it with Michele we decided to sign up together.  I'm so thankful for her because I'm not certain that I would've signed up alone.

What were you nervous about at the start, and then realized it was no big deal?

I thought it was going to be very intimidating.  I wasn't sure if I was going to fit in or be able to do it.  The only CrossFit I had ever known was from watching the competitions on television.  I now realize those competitors on television aren't possibly human. haha Anyone can do CrossFit, I didn't know workouts could be scaled to your level of ability.

What is the biggest thing you've noticed since you began?
I've realized how much I enjoy working out and how good it makes you feel.  There have been days I feel tired and don't want to go to the gym, but once I'm done working out i feel so much better.  Finishing a WOD makes me feel accomplished for the day.

What have you improved most in?
Confidence.  It is sometimes still scary to try new things, but you just have to believe in yourself.  You have to keep practicing things you want to improve in.

What do you enjoy the most at the gym?
The people.  I'm thankful for the new friendships I've made. I look forward to seeing everyone and working out with them. Most everyone has a great sense of humor, CFSF makes any bad day much, much better.

What differences have you noticed in yourself?
Ive always enjoyed working out but CrossFit just takes it to a whole new level.  I used to feel guilty if I didn't go to the gym.  CrossFit makes me totally enjoy working out, If I have to miss a day I feel like I'm totally missing out.  Missing a day sometimes feels like missing a week

What is your Kryptonite?
Burpees… and kettlebells, I thought I would enjoy working out with them, not the case.

What do you like the most about CrossFit?
It is never the same and it never gets easy… for anyone.  Everyone has a certain something that they are good at, except for Jason.. he is pretty much good at everything. :-) Even strangers think he is incredible.

What do you like the least?
Finishing a workout and wishing I would've pushed myself a little harder.

What are your future goals at the gym?
I want to continue to improve in my abilities.  Continue to do things I never thought were possible for myself.

Congratulations once again Amanda! Look at that physique!!!

Congratulations to January's CrossFitter of the Month! Janie Bentley

Congratulations to January's CrossFitter of the Month!

Congratulations to Janie Bentley!

Janie is an unbelievable pleasures to have in class. CrossFit Silver Fox is lucky to have such a dedicated, hard working, motivated, and funny ass lady in the gym.

Janie came to CrossFit Silver Fox in October.  She was a bit shy at first and a bit intimidated by CrossFit, but boy did that go away fast! lol  She has been wonderful in class. She always has questions and is always looking for ways to get better.  She loves and believes in CrossFit. She has definitely drank the Kool-Aid....and keeps coming back for more.  She always finds a way to class. She is a duel threat....Hockey Mom and CrossFitter!!!  Here is a "bit" of Janie's story and what she thinks about CrossFit Silver Fox.  THIS HAS NOT BEEN EDITED..THESE ARE ALL HER WORDS LOL...ALL OF THEM.....

Janie’s Really Important Message for Those Not Currently Crossfitting:

If you are reading this, there is a chance that you are interested in joining and you’re intimidated. You may not think you can handle Crossfit, because that’s how I felt. I promise you that EVERYONE in that gym will struggle through a workout the same way you will if you choose to give this a shot, and that’s what makes Crossfit beautiful.  Everyone works out at their max and although your max may look very different than other people’s max, you all are torching calories and getting physically and emotionally stronger together.  No one has the brainpower at the end of a workout to compare your workout to theirs, because they’re too busy working on breathing, standing, and counting their rounds so don’t let intimidation get in the way of trying the most fun, varied workout on the planet. Lastly, I swear to Sweet Baby Jesus if I can do this, you can.  There. I feel better now that I’ve expressed my Really Important Message...

What made you want to join CrossFit SilverFox?

I ask myself that every time I see T2B on the board…. :)

So, there have been two times in my whole life that I’ve enjoyed exercising:
1.) When a friend and I trained for the Cleveland Triathlon in 2011.  The thought of putting on a swimsuit was horrifying to me, but for some reason, I just woke up one morning and said “I’m going to learn how to swim (for speed and endurance) and because it was completely out of the norm for me, I had ZERO expectations for myself.  I also really loved that even from afar (my friend lived in India at the time!) there was some major camaraderie, knowing that she and I were tackling something brand new and difficult together.

The second time I “tolerated” exercise is when I started a lifting routine, about a year after the triathlon. I found out that I loved lifting.  It made me feel strong and I liked focusing on what I could do, instead of what my limitations were.  I stopped lifting though because I wasn’t really seeing the progress (weight loss) that I thought I should have (I was doing a lot wrong which is why I wasn’t seeing progress).

In August, I started to eat Paleo as a result of some diet sensitivities that I was having, and Crossfit kept showing up on all the recipe blogs that I was going to.  I knew little about it, but I did know that it involved lifting, doing something different every day, and that it was in a supportive atmosphere (camaraderie, yay!).  I also liked that someone would tell me what to do to make the most of my time, if I decided to join.  Those were the things that I liked previously, so It just seemed like it was the perfect type of routine/place for me. When Jen and Ritchie reminded me about CFSF grand opening a couple of different times while we were at our kids’ hockey practices, I knew there were too many arrows pointing in this direction for me NOT to at least give it a shot.

What were you nervous about before starting, and now realized it was nothing to worry about?
Oh. Em.  Gee.  I was a wreck before I came in every day for the first two weeks.  I felt like I was going on a job interview each time I parked my car in front of the Harvester.  I had a lot to conquer, but all the nervousness was just doubt that was ALL IN MY HEAD.  Let’s make a bulleted list out of ease for the eyes of all of the crap that my inner “lazygirl” concocted to keep me the hell away from CFSF followed by my inner ninja that beat lazygirl to death and encouraged me to join:
  • I JUST had reconstructive foot surgery (ERRRR...last November).  Jumping, burpees, box jumps, running...I’ll never be able to do what everyone else is doing, and then I’ll just be “that girl that’s modifying.” JANIE, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE THATTTT GIRL??? [Yes, I do.  Now shut up. Your foot will be fine.  And if it’s not, you live in America and have access to ice and Advil. ]

  • I am out of shape. Everyone else will be in shape. I will stand out as being out of shape. [Fantastic point.  How about you go eat peanut butter off the spoon while sitting on the couch and cry about that.  Better yet, get off your ass and go join CFSF (then go home and eat ALMOND butter off the spoon).]

  • My family’s schedule (including two kids in hockey, one kid in dance, and a husband that’s a State Trooper that works 12 hour shifts) will never allow me to make this type of time commitment. [You are in Batavia anyway for your kids' activities. You can make this work if you want to, but you have to make YOUR activity a priority too.]

  • I don’t know anyone else there.  None of my friends want to make this commitment with me right now, maybe I shouldn’t either.  [You’ll make friends.  You’re not shy and even if you decide to pretend to be shy for 11 seconds because that’s as long as you would last playing that charade, you’ll probably realize everyone there is quite nice (true story!)]

  • I need new sneakers.  [You’ll get some soon. Side note: I accidentally ordered some while ordering some off the Reebok website for my son for Christmas.  They’re BRIGHT yellow and Jay called me Big Bird for a week until I changed the shoe laces to pink. I took it as a complement.  Big Bird has a very slender neck!]

Honestly, I could keep going, but you get the drift.  My crazy brain had really developed a crap-load of reasons as to why this was a bad idea.  Thank God I didn’t listen! The 9ish screws in my right foot have certainly limited me from doing some things, but Jay always, always, ALWAYS gives me plenty of ideas as to how I can modify without compromising the workout.  It’s constantly a challenge and I always leave so glad that I made time to attend the class!

What is the biggest thing you’ve noticed since you began?
I used to be the girl that would dread going to the gym or fitting in a workout. It just seemed like SUCH WORK.  Even when I enjoyed the tri-training or the lifting set I was doing, it was still a struggle to stay motivated and I'd skip workouts often.  Since I joined CFSF, I get really, REALLY angry if something comes up that prevents me from getting to a class, especially if it’s a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday (lifting days). I LOVE going. I don’t need to talk myself into it!

What have you improved the most in?
Upper body strength and sit ups. When I started, I couldn’t do a SINGLE sit up. But I can now! I also couldn’t do a single dip, and I did 10 consecutively (assisted) yesterday! I love it when I think “Oh sh*t, I can’t do that”, then do it and think “Oh sh*t! I just did that!!!”

What do you enjoy the most at the gym?
Lifting! And I jump roping, even though it makes me have to pee.  I will absolutely master double unders soon. And by master, I mean 10 in a row.  And by soon, I mean before I’m 55. :)

What differences have you noticed in yourself since joining?
I’m happier.  I have a lot more confidence in my abilities and I find myself focusing on them. One day I said “I think I’ll go ahead and try doing a handstand because it’s something that I see other people doing and there is not a single reason in my head that I shouldn’t be able to do one.” And I did it. Like 5 times in 10 minutes, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke! I remember thinking, “6 months ago, I would have never even tried that...I would have talked myself out of it! But not today!”

What is your Kryptonite?
T2B (toes to bar). SWEET JESUS! I seriously watch you people that can do this and think “hot damn! Someday, maybe?!”

What do you love the most about CrossFit?
Every day is different, and every day I feel intimidation (looking at the workout), followed by the feeling of accomplishment. I had one REALLY bad workout where everything seemed like it went wrong and I still left saying “well, that was STILL better than NOT going!” I am also getting used to feeling proud of myself. It’s not a natural feeling (anyone want to chip in for therapy or get me a tissue?) but it’s kind of nice!

What do you like the least?
Modifying things, but I’m getting over that because I always still get a great workout in.
oh.  and anything more than a 600m run.

What are you future goals at the gym?
I’m going to do a pull up, and when I do, we are going to have a frickin’ party... and Jay’s going to wear his Ninja Turtle socks and his Ninja Turtle sweatshirt to that party.  Perhaps you all can grab a CFSF sweatshirt to wear ($20. for sale, now! See Jay!) I wish I could send out a save-the-date, but I’ve got some work to do, so it’s TBA.  But just so you know, you all are invited. :)
